Low Sodium Magickal Seasoning Blend

I had to go on a low sodium diet recently for medical reasons (see this post for details) and I thought everything tasted awfully bland at first. Then, I got smart and adapted all of my seasoning blends to take out most of the salt. This low sodium version of my Magickal Seasoning Blend has all the same flavors as the original, but only 90 mg of sodium per teaspoon. If you are used to typical amounts of salt, this seasoning blend will help a lot, but it will still take a few weeks for your taste buds to adjust to so little salt. It is hard to believe at the beginning, but your food really will start to get tastier again! If you are already used to a low sodium diet, this blend will perk up any savory dish and make it taste fantastic! Here are the ingredients you will need to make it:

Combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl:

Whisk until thoroughly mixed together:

Transfer the seasoning blend to an airtight container and store at room temperature. This jar contains six times the amount of the recipe below. I always make a lot because we go through it pretty quickly. It is very easy to multiply the recipe up if you use a digital scale to weigh your ingredients!

One teaspoon of this low sodium blend weighs 3.6 grams compared to the 4.0 grams of my original version. This difference really doesn’t seem to matter very much, so you can substitute my Low Sodium Magickal Seasoning Blend one for one with my original version in all of my recipes. Just use the same measurement or weight that is called for of Magickal Seasoning Blend.

  1. Glad to see this. I’ve eaten low salt for years, and found things I added your original blend to were almost inedibly salty. I halved the salt ratio to other ingredients which slightly improved it. Look forward to trying this.

    1. This blend should work really well for you, Karey! It has taken several weeks for my taste buds to adjust, but I can definitely see why my original version would seem way too salty to you after years of eating low salt. If the small amount of salt from the celery salt is still too much for you, you could use ground celery seed at 20% the weight of the celery salt instead, or just leave it out completely.

  2. I’m definitely going to try this, as I need to go on a low salt diet. Just one question though – why sugar? I can’t recall ever seeing sugar in a seasoning blend. I know American food – even the savoury stuff – tends to be sweeter than here in the UK, but does the sugar have another purpose?

    1. It really helps to make a low salt diet easier! I have some sugar in my original blend as well, and it does add to the overall flavor. It never seems sweet to me, even when used liberally. If you prefer not to use it, though, I would increase the onion powder to make up for the difference.

I love hearing from you! Please leave a comment!
