Getting Ready for Litha (Summer Solstice)

Litha, or the Summer Solstice, is on June 21st this year in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the longest day of the year, and we celebrate the sun being at the height of his power. All the plants are growing and everything is green!

Click on this link if you want to see how we celebrated Litha last year. I started getting ready for this year’s Summer Solstice by updating my Litha Pinterest board and YouTube playlist:

Then, since our yard is full of clover, we made vegan clover honee to use in some of our Litha recipes.

Don’t worry, we left thousands of clover flowers for the bees and bumblebees! Clover is most effectively pollinated by bumblebees, and we have some very persistent ones by our house. We saw several while picking the clover for our honee, but it was hard to get a photo since they kept flitting from flower to flower!

One follows my mom around when she’s outside, and she named it Malachi after the bumblebee in my favorite childhood book, The Witch Family by Eleanor Estes.

Our little garden is doing well! (So well that we had to cut back the sage, rosemary, and thyme after taking these photos.) Here is our sage and lavender:

Our tomato and pepper plants are flowering!

We found a few small tomatoes at the back of our tomato plant and a little spider on the trellis:

Our third pot has a small basil plant and a second sage plant. Basil never seems to do well for us, so if anyone has any suggestions please comment below!

Finally, here is our rosemary and thyme:

We went to McCarthy park in Marysville to check it out because Vegan Pagans of Ohio will be having a vegan potluck picnic and nature walk there on Sunday 6/24. All vegan pagans are welcome to come, so check out our Facebook group if you’re interested!

We also watched some Litha videos to get more ideas on how to celebrate. Here are our favorites ones:

I also found these videos that will be live from Stonehenge for the sunset on 6/20 starting at 21:00 GMT and the sunrise on 6/21 starting at 04:22 GMT. Note that GMT is four hours ahead of EST here in the USA, so that is 5 pm on 6/20 and 12:22 am on 6/21 in Ohio. Update: those times are correct, but the sunset live feed started and ended earlier than their stated time. I would tune in early for the sunrise live feed just in case that also runs early.

I hope this post was helpful for you as you prepare for Litha, and my mom and I wish you a very Blessed Solstice!
