Beans ‘N Gravy

This dish is very simple and quick to prepare, but really filling and delicious! I grew up eating beans on bread with my grandpa, and this recipe is my vegan re-creation of that childhood favorite. It is perfect for when you are hungry and tired, or only have a few minutes to make dinner! Serve the beans over rice or on top of baked potatoes. Or, spoon them over a couple of slices of bread like Grandpa did!

Here are the ingredients for Beans ‘N Gravy:

Each of the ingredients is doing something important, so I don’t recommend making any substitutions. The Magickal Seasoning Blend¬†provides a lot of flavor without having to add eight separate spices, the liquid smoke gives a baconish flavor, the hot sauce adds just a little kick, and the Earth Balance and nutritional yeast turn the aquafaba (bean juice) into a beautiful sauce!

To prepare the Beans ‘N Gravy, dump the beans (including the liquid) into a medium-sized glass bowl, and then add the rest of the ingredients, except for the green onion and black pepper:

Stir gently to combine. The Earth Balance will stay in a blob, but that is ok:

Heat for 2 minutes, then stir gently to mix in the now melted Earth Balance:

Heat for another two minutes and stir again. Heat for another minute if needed to be piping hot. The beans are ready!

They aren’t fancy, but they are really good! However you choose to serve them, be sure to add plenty of chopped green onion and cracked pepper as they put the flavor over the top. Here are my favorite ways to eat Beans ‘N Gravy:


When I put the beans on baked potatoes, I split open the potatoes and sprinkle the insides with a bit of Magickal Seasoning Blend before adding the beans.

Beans 'N Gravy

Very simple, but really delicious, beans in a savory sauce! Serve over rice, on top of baked potatoes, or with your favorite bread!

  • 2 16 oz cans Great Northern Beans
  • 10 g (2 tsp) Frank's Hot Sauce
  • 14 g (1 TBS) Earth Balance Spread
  • 6 g (1 1/2 tsp) Magickal Seasoning Blend
  • 5 g (1 tsp) Liquid Smoke
  • 5 g (1 TBS) Nutritional Yeast
  • 3 large Green Onions, chopped
  • Black Pepper


  1. Do NOT drain the beans! Add all of the ingredients, except for the green onions and black pepper, to a glass bowl, and stir to combine. (If you don't already have Magickal Seasoning Blend made up, stop and make some now.)

  2. Heat for two minutes in the microwave, then stir to mix in the now melted Earth Balance. Heat for another two minutes, then stir gently but thoroughly to get everything well blended. Heat for another minute if needed to get the beans piping hot.

  3. Serve over rice, on top of baked potatoes, or with your favorite bread. Add the black pepper and chopped green onions on top. Enjoy!
